My Freedom Day triumph

My Freedom Day triumph

Five, four, three, two, one … By the time our relay team eventually started the 7,5 km race from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand on Sunday, the suspense had become unbearable. Already the race had been postponed by a day because of rainy weather. Now, our 10.30 start had been delayed by more than three hours because […]

Capsicum and Chilli Jam

“I love cooking – it’s probably where I’m in my happiest creative place. I don’t think I’ll ever make serious money out of my preserves but I really value the friends I have and it’s my way of showing love. I suppose I was influenced by my grandmother who had a beautiful old farmhouse. She […]

Where do you live and how long have you lived there? Milton, Ontario, Canada. What do you love most about Canada? Like least? Love Most:  I love the seasons!  You can experience all four seasons to the fullest.  It feels like it resembles different stages in my life Like least:  The fact that I cannot pop in and […]

Coyote Grill, laid back eatery in Laguna Beach

Coyote Grill, laid back eatery in Laguna Beach

Just outside the trendy hussle and bussle of Downtown Laguna Beach is the friendly Coyote Grill. It’s a very casual “locals” spot — they have been serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily since 1989. They offer addictive Baja-Style Mexican food with plenty of Catalina ocean views. Their food is prepared fresh by hand everyday. Many […]

Eileen Nicholls — Loving Los Angeles

Eileen Nicholls — Loving Los Angeles

Where do you live and how long have you lived there? We have lived in the LA area for 1 1/2 years (time flies!) How would you describe your suburb? Beautiful. La Canada is a city of large old California Oak trees. The homes have quite a bit of character and the neighbors are super friendly and engaging! La […]

Exotic Quirimbas Archipelago, Northern Mozambique

Exotic Quirimbas Archipelago, Northern Mozambique

Sue Segar, recently travelled to the remote and exotic Quirimbas Archipelago in northern Mozambique. What do Daniel Craig, David Rothschild and Tokyo Sexwale have in common? Well, one thing, I gathered on a recent trip, is that they have all discovered Mozambique. In particular, they have been captivated by the remote Quirimbas Archipelago, a vast […]

Goodwill visit to Central Africa

Goodwill visit to Central Africa

Sue Segar spent a week travelling with senior members of the South African National Defence Force on the annual goodwill visit to soldiers deployed in the Central African Republic, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo. We exit the airport building and walk into smouldering heat and a throng of beggars carrying dangly-legged beggars on their backs. […]

It’s raining as I step out of the train and onto a sodden city central platform. I marvel at how I choose to go corporate on the very day the heavens open in Queensland. I commend myself on my choice of outfit—in essence, my spare wedding ensemble from my niece’s recent nuptials—the sensible attire I rejected in favour of a frothy, frivolous dress. Fashionistas Trinny and Susannah would be proud.
